The Black Water Gorge
The most dramatic passage
of the Black Water is between Kuehnhaide and
Hinterer Grund, where the creek cuts ever
deeper into the gneiss rocks. Majestic rock formations like the
Nonnenfelsen (Nun Rock), Ringmauer (Ring Wall) and Katzenstein (Cat’s
Stone) rise on both sides of the canyon and force the water into a
narrow gorge, a particulary pleasant place on hot summer days.

The Family route
As you can see in the profile,
you have to overcome an altitude difference of nearly 300 metres
on this tour. But don’t be
scared of this! The altitude is distributed on 10 km distance, so that the
path is nowhere steep. And above all, you will be fascinated by the rock
formations and wont recognize the easy ascent.
At the Stone Bridge we leave the Black Water and
follow the marked bike route „Silberstrasse“ (Silver Road) to Olbernhau.
First the terrain still gently increases up to the Steinhuebel (Stone Hill,
817 m), from where you have a fantastic view over the green ocean of forest
around. Further to Olbernhau or rather to the Copper hammer
“Saigerhuette” and the "Land of toys" in Gruenthal
we go on broad forest roads mostly downhill into the Floeha
valley.
