Pressnitz Valley – Mirror of our history

The Pressnitz river rises in a moor on the crest of the Ore Mountains in 900 m altitude. Today in the broad basin of the upper Pressnitz lies the Pressnitz reservoir (Prisecnicka prehrada) instead of the former Free Mining Town Pressnitz. There is nothing left over from the thousand years old mining town with its baroque palace. The view over endless woods and meadows to the prominent peaks Jelení hora (994 m) and Velký Spicak (965 m) reminds of Scandinavia.

   Pressnitz yesterday                      today

Steinbach with Klínovec mountain (1244 m)

Below Krystofovy Hamry the mountain ridges push the Pressnitz river into a 300 m deep valley. Since 1892 the steam locomotives of the Pressnitztalbahn snort through the valley here, between Steinbach and Joehstadt you can experience them til today.

From Steinbach downwards the bikeway runs on the former railway line, that was once hemmed by countless mines and hammer mills. In Niederschmiedeberg there was made history just a few years ago - in 1993 we constructed the first CFC-free fridge in the world here. These all are only short episodes for the Pressnitz river. As from time immemorial the river meanders between shining forests on steep mountainsides northwards and reaches the Zschopau river just before the renaissance palace of Wolkenstein.
