The Black Water
The
headwaters of the Black Water (Schwarze Pockau) are in the moors of Jelení
hora (994 m). From there the creek meanders through colourful mountain
meadows and remote villages like Satzung and Kuehnhaide. Behind Kuehnhaide
the water cuts ever deeper into the gneiss rocks. Majestic rock formations
like the Nonnenfelsen (Nun Rock), Ringmauer (Ring Wall) and Katzenstein (Cat´s
Stone) rise on both sides of the canyon and force the water into a narrow
gorge, a particularly pleasant place on hot summer days.
Down to
its mouth, the Black Water remains in a narrow canyon that is cut up to 200
metres deep into the rock. Time and time again, impressing formations like
the Loewenkopf (Lion´s Head) or the Talkanzel (Canyon Pulpit) rise above its
many slopes. After 30 km the Black Water empties into the Floeha river in
Pockau.

The route
The route runs mostly on forest roads without traffic and downwards
without serious ascents. From Satzung to the settlement "Neue Welt" use the
road, turn to the right there and follow the marks "Skimagistrale
Erzgebirge" 7 kilometres through Reitzenhain and Kuehnhaide. From here down
to Pockau the hiking und bike trail "Pockautalweg" is marked red. Only below
Rittersberg (crossing B 174) we recommend to use the road for one kilometre,
as this passage of the hiking trail is not suitable for biking.
