The Zschopau Valley
The Zschopau river with its tributaries drains the biggest part of the Ore
Mountains. It rises directly at the highest saxonian mountain Fichtelberg in
1140 m altitude and meanders from there 80 km deeply carved through the Ore
Mountains to the town of Floeha. Farther it runs through the Saxonian Hill
Land and finally flows near Doebeln into the Mulde river.
The river’s course is hemmed by a
lot of castles, which are mostly high above the river on rugged rocks. You
find these witnesses of former times especially numerous in the Middle Ore
Mountains, as there are Wolkenstein, Scharfenstein, Wildeck and at the exit
of the river from the Ore Mountains Augustusburg.

The Bikeway Zschopau Valley
The Zschopau Bikeway
is marked from the river´s spring up to it´s mouth. In the narrow gorge,
however, isn´t everywhere enough space for a separate bike path, so that the
route often escapes to the left or the right side onto the ridges. Who
prefers to stay near the river and copes with a couple of cars for that, can
partly use the valley road. The dotted line shows the planned shift of the
Bike route.
